Help 1. General topics on CD Archives and Help This program can save all directory and file names of your CDs. After having added your CDs to an archive, you can search for a file or directory and the program shows on what CD the file(s) is/are situated and shows the exact path. You don't need to have to insert any CD to find your file. You can use the program also for other purposes. e.g. this help file was created with the program. Some important notes: - '*.*' stands for all files. You can limit the types of files you want to add to your archive. All search methods in the program compare the text you entered with the filename. if the text is part of the filename, the search is successful. Thus, don't use "*.exe" for all executable files. This won't work! Use ".exe" instead! - in this Help file, the entries in the archive are also called directories. - The program doesn't care whether an entry in the archive is an file or directory, if the directory is empty. 2. Adding a CD to the archive This function reads the directories and files of an CD or other Drive and adds it to the archive. a) Insert CD and select directory Insert a CD and select your CD drive and / or the directory you want to add. You have to double click on the directory to select it. The current dir is shown in the window "Add CD". b) Enter name and group of the CD Enter the name and group of the CD in the boxes in the window "Add CD". If group is disabled, you can enable it under Options - Groups activated. c) Add to archive At program start, this help file is shown. To add a CD to a new archive, click on the button "New". If you want to add a CD to an existing archive, click on "Add". If you disable the checkbox "Add only dirs to archive" (Options), the Program adds files and directories to the archive. If the box is checked, it adds only directories. d) further Options for files For using this option, Archivating files must be enabled (Options / disable "Add only dirs to archive") I) a single condition When you have added several CDs to the archive, the program may get very slow: If you don't limit the types of files that are added to the archive, the archive gets too big. You can limit the types of files that are archived through entering a search text in the box right of the drive change box. "*.*" stands for all files, ".exe" for all .exe-files. Example: if you enter "p.t" all files containing this text are added, e.g. "help.TXT" or "Zip.tmp" ... II) several conditions You can also enter up to six conditions at a time: click at "More than one condition" (Add CD) and "List of file names". You can enter one condition in every box. e.g. if you want to add all graphic files to the archive enter the following: box 1: ".bmp" box2: ".jp" (-> *.jpeg and *.jpg) box 3: ".gif" and so on ... Every file that contains one of the search text is added. ( Connection with OR ) e) further options for directories Problem: if you have an CD with graphic and sound files, but you want only to add the graphic files to the archive. You can limit the files as described in 2.d), but all directories are added, even if they don't contain any graphic files. Solution: In general, all directories (except if you limit the dir depth) of a CD are added to the archive. However, you can limit the types of directories through "search all" and "copy to main window": Enter an search text (e.g. ".bmp") and click on "search all" (further description: see 5. Search) When you click on "Copy search result to main window", only your wanted files ".bmp" and their position (directories) remain in the archive. 3. Save a) Auto save A lot of functions, e.g. adding a Cd to the archive, save the archive automatic under the file "treesav.txt" or "treefile.txt" (In the path you entered in the upper box of the options) b) Save manual Like with other Programs: File | Save as ... You should save the archive as .txt-file, but that's not necessary. The dialog's start directory is the one you entered in the second Box of the Options. 4. Load a) Menu As in other Programs: File | Open... b) Quick load Click on "Open" to load the file "treesav.txt". 5. Export HTML a) activate option "name of the current dir" It is necessary to activate the option "name of the current dir". If you don't do this, the links in the HTML file won't work b) Add your directories to the archive c) modify the archive In the end, there shouldn't be more than 1000 files in the archive, or the HTML file will be too big. d) export Archive Klick on "File | HTML Export ..." and save the archive as HTML file. It is not possible to reload it, so save it also in text format if you want to use the archive later! 6. Search a) Enter search text Open the window "search" and enter your search text in the box. You don't need to enter the whole name of the file or directory, just enter a significant part of it. e.g. enter "ram Files" if you search for "Program files". b) search for a file or directory Click on "Search". The first directory or file which contains the search text will be shown. Furthermore, a new box appears which shows the CD (and group) on which you find the file. In the box under the archive, you can find the path of the file / directory. Note: don't search for the name of a group, or an error will occur. If you search for a file / directory which has the same name as a group (if groups disabled: CD), you have to use "search all". c) Search all This command shows all fitting files / directories in a new window, in the same style as the archive itself. The search result is auto saved as "Found.dat". Click on "Copy search results to main window" to show the results in the main window and to be able to save and edit it. 7. Edit This functions edit an existing archive. a) Options: standard directories See 4. Save. b) Sort alphabetical Click on "Sort" (Window: Edit) to sort the entries in the archive alphabetical. Don't do this with this help file, or these lines will get mixed up! If you click on "dirs in front of files", all directories will be put in front of the files. (except empty directories which are treated as files) c) Delete directory / file select a directory or file in the archive and click on "delete" or press DEL. d) Create entry / file To insert a directory, file or comment manually, enter the new dir or file in the box at the bottom of the edit window. Then click on "Create entry". If you want to create a subdirectory, click on "Create sub-entry" instead. e) Edit entry Click two times on an entry (not too quick!!!) to edit it. f) copy, insert Copy and insert together are a move command: Click on "copy" to copy the selected entry. Then select a destination. If you click on "paste", the copied entry will be moved above the selected destination. Limitations of the shareware version The help file is written for the full version. The following restrictions were made in the shareware version: 1. Limit of 30 days testing period After 30 days, the all program function except help and registration will be disabled. 2. CDs can't be added to opened archives. If you want to archive CDs, you have to add them to a new archive. When you open a file, the Button "Add" will be disabled. 3. Limitation to 26 CDs You can add a maximum of 26 CDs to a new archive. After that, the "Add"-Button will be disabled. The "New" button is disabled after max. 35 clicks on it. After some days, these two numbers will decrease. 4. Not all types of files can be added to an archive - See Help: points 2.d.I) and 2.d.II) 2.d.I) is disabled. (Note: the box is hidden in the shareware version!) Furthermore, you can't change the six conditions of 2.d.II). 5. Limit of directory depth At the first day of your testing period, the option "limit max. dir depth" is enabled and set to a maximum of 30. This maximum will decrease after some days. 6. Note: edit and search functions aren't limited ! Two buttons in the window "edit" are disabled, but that's the same in the full version: - to be able to insert something, you must copy something. first! - "Cut" can't be used yet. Use Copy and paste, that has the same effect. - duplicating entries isn't possible yet. (The programming language doesn't support it directly.)
